![]() When the five female and one male elk were brought into the now newly renamed Lone Elk park, the lone elk, formerly so shy, showed up within 20 minutes of their being released. The elk story even gained enough national attention for Walter Cronkite to cover the event. Fishing was closed in 2017 in an effort to rebuild the fish population. The Fred Weber Corporation donated a 50,000 dam to build a lake within the park. We also rehabilitate injured birds of prey at our on-site. Our large outdoor avian exhibits provide housing for a variety of World Bird Sanctuary’s non-releasable birds. We feature free seasonal shows, nature trails, educational programs and picnic pavilions. Research was conducted in 2016 to determine if a sinkhole was under the lake. World Bird Sanctuary rests peacefully on 305 acres of Missouri hardwood forest, next door to Lone Elk County Park and the Chubb Trail. ĭomestic animals are not permitted whatsoever, even if confined to a vehicle. It is open to the public year-round and is the perfect spot to take. Across from Interstate 44, the World Bird Sanctuary, Castlewood State Park, and Tyson Research Center, Lone Elk County Park has protected animals such as bison and elk for many years. The park is also home to many deer, wild turkey and waterfowl. Louis County, Lone Elk County Park is a 546-acre wide wildlife management area. There are driving routes that provide views of the elk and bison, often at close proximity. The park officially opened on October 17, 1971, and six bison were acquired from the St. Louis County acquired 405 acres (1.64 km 2) for Tyson County Park, which became Lone Elk Park in 1966. The land was reacquired by the federal government during the Korean War, and the wildlife herds were destroyed for safety reasons in 1958, but one lone bull elk survived. After the war the area became a county park and herds of elk and bison were established in 1948. Lone Elk Park was originally part of the Tyson Valley Powder Plant during World War II.
